SEPARATION ANXIETY | Why Does My Dog Panic in the Crate?

SEPARATION ANXIETY | Why Does My Dog Panic in the Crate?

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

My name is Jodi Little, creator of The CALM DOG Connection Online Course.

HERE'S THE QUICK ANSWER:

When your dog panics in the crate, their body may genuinely believe something is wrong the moment you walk out the door.

That reaction is not just a training issue;

your dog may be unable to control a stress response

that has crossed over into full survival mode.

This is not disobedience, this is very stressful for your dog. Once you understand what may be filling your dog's stress bucket long before you ever grab your keys, calmer departures and a calmer crate experience become possible.

If you are searching for a dog trainer near me because your dog just shredded another blanket in their kennel, please know you are already doing exactly what a caring dog parent does.

Just like having groceries or packages delivered right to your door, I designed The CALM DOG Connection so you can get instant access from your tablet, phone or computer to start learning at your own pace right away.

Over the years, I've worked with thousands of dogs and owners and rehabilitated hundreds of rescue & client dogs in my home and I can help you with your dog too.

Your dog may be showing you their stress in several different ways.

- Barking or howling the moment the crate door closes

- Pacing, drooling, or shaking inside the kennel

- Destroying blankets, bedding, or the kennel itself

- Crying or panicking the second you pick up your keys

- Following you from room to room before you even leave

Watching this happen may leave you feeling trapped inside your own home, exhausted, and guilty every time you leave.

Please remember, your dog NEEDS your help to get through this. they cannot train themselves out of this. They depend entirely on you to show them a different way to feel about being alone. I'm here to help show you and your dog the way.

When your dog is showing behaviors, please understand they are not a bad dog.

They are not GIVING you a hard time.

They are HAVING a hard time.

The CALM DOG Connection

Come Meet Me & the Dogs

Before we go any deeper...

I would love to introduce you to some of the incredible dogs who came to me with behaviors so severe that it made them difficult to adopt.

Many of them had EXTREME Separation Anxiety

They are now thriving because of The CALM DOG Connection.

In this short video, watch me work with 15–20 dogs at a time, and get a little behind-the-scenes glimpse into the calm, happy environment I want to help you create with your dog.

Notice there are no corrections or commands, other than one "Uh Uh" to quiet the barking.

Just CALM Connection with me and the fur babies.

When you're finished watching, please come back and join me.

I'll explain why your dog may be experiencing this behavior, what they may be trying to tell you, and how you can begin helping your dog immediately.

If The CALM DOG Connection works for dogs with the most severe behaviors imagine how well it will work with your dog.

Enjoy these precious dogs!

UNDERSTANDING THE STRESS

BENEATH THE BEHAVIOR

Imagine your dog was born with an empty stress bucket.

In a simpler world, that bucket would fill very slowly, drop by drop, over a long stretch of time.

But everyday life in a busy human world can fill it much faster than that.

Every stressor your dog experiences, big or small, becomes another drop added to that bucket.

The panic you see the moment you shut the crate door is rarely where the story begins.

It may simply be the moment the bucket finally overflowed.

That is why trying to only correct the crate behavior so often falls short. We have to get to the root of all the stress.

The panic in the crate is most likely the overflow of many other stress factors your dog is feeling.

can be very overstimulating to your dog

EVERYDAY STRESSORS
YOU MIGHT NOT NOTICE

Long before you ever reach for your keys, your dog's bucket may already be filling.

Here are a just a few everyday drops that may be adding up without you realizing it.

A change in your morning routine

Being placed in the crate and then abruptly leaving

Only being placed in kennel when you leave

Having never been taught to be alone even when you are home

Talking to them with excited greetings every time you see them

A previous scary memory tied to being left alone

Here is the part that may be hardest to hear.

Some of these drops of stress actually come from you out of a place of love.

When you comfort your dog with cuddles, baby talk, or a long, emotional goodbye, your dog may not experience that as comfort at all. Dogs do not hug or talk to each other in the wild.

They may experience it as confirmation that something really is wrong.

For example, a lingering hug at the door while your dog trembles can unintentionally add additional drops instead of easing the stress.

A dramatic "I'll be right back!" said in a high, worried voice may do the same thing.

Even rushing back inside the moment they bark can teach your dog that panic is what gets your attention.

This is where my Adrenaline Scale that I teach about inside the course becomes so helpful.

It measures your dog's stress from a calm, resting state all the way up to a fully overwhelmed state. I want to teach you how to keep your dog below their stress threshold at all times, not just when you leave the house.

Once your dog crosses that threshold, they may move into full blown survival mode, where their body reacts on instinct instead of choice.

It is not disobedience in that moment.

It is biology

I'll show you how to keep your dog calm throughout

all the moments in their day.

💜 I'M HERE TO HELP

💛 I know you may feel overwhelmed with your dog's behaviors or not know where to start, but I am here to walk you through every step of the way.

I'd love to help you to understand your dog so you can guide them with CALM instead of Commands and Connection instead of Correction.

You will have instant access to learn at your own pace, whenever it fits your life.

And here is the best part—you don't have to waste money buying a different training course for every single behavior you want to fix.

Because when you learn how to calm the root, all of those different behaviors naturally begin to improve together.

To make getting started easy, I've created two simple ways to continue.

TREATING THE SYMPTOM OR

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE BEHAVIOR

Picture your dog's behavior as a leaf on a tree.

The barking, the pacing, the destroyed blanket in the crate: these are the leaves you can actually see.

But leaves do not grow on their own.

They are connected to branches, and the branches are connected to roots buried below the surface.

Those roots may include overstimulation, under-fulfillment, and a lack of feeling safe.

If you only trim the leaves, new ones simply grow back in their place.

That is why my goal is never to chase behaviors one by one.

My goal is to help you get to the root.

When we begin calming the root, many behaviors naturally become easier to improve because your dog is no longer carrying quite so much overwhelm.

A NEW WAY TO
INTERACT WITH YOUR DOG

Here are the methods I use to help thousands of dogs and owners create a calm, balanced, happy dog and form an amazing connection.

A few of the approaches we work through together inside the course include:

- Building a true Place of Safety so the kennel feels like a den, not a punishment

- Calm, quiet departures and arrivals instead of emotional goodbyes or excited hellos

- A structured decompression period that lowers your dog's stress before crate training even begins

- The FurEver Four daily routine that teaches your dog's body and mind how to fully settle

Your dog does not need you to be perfect.

They simply need you to become the calm, steady guide who helps them feel safe enough to rest, even when you are not in the room.

That is the moment everything can begin to shift:

not when the behavior disappears overnight, but when you realize your dog was never giving you a hard time at all.
