RESOURCE GUARDING

RESOURCE GUARDING

Does This Sound Familiar?

Are you afraid of your dog's behavior?

Do you find yourself avoiding certain situations because you're worried your dog might growl, snap, or react?

Does your dog:

• growl over food, toys, or bones

• guard their kennel, bed, or space

• become protective over you

• stiffen or freeze when approached

• snap when someone gets too close

• seem unpredictable around certain resources

Resource guarding can feel stressful, overwhelming, and sometimes very scary.

You may feel:

• nervous

• frustrated

• overwhelmed

• worried someone could get hurt

You may have already tried:

• taking things away

• correcting the behavior

• trading treats

• training videos

• advice from friends

• trying to avoid triggers

And yet the behavior continues.

One of the biggest things I want you to know is this:

Your dog is not bad.

Your dog is not dominant.

Your dog is not trying to control you.

They are HAVING a hard time.

And a CALM DOG is the answer.

What Most Owners Don't Realize

One of the most common mistakes I see is assuming resource guarding is about dominance.

Many dogs are not trying to take charge.

Many dogs are trying to protect something that makes them feel safe, secure, or fulfilled.

Another common mistake is punishing the warning signs.

Growling.

Freezing.

Stiffening.

Hovering.

These warning signs are communication.

Many owners are trying their best.

They simply haven't been taught what their dog is actually feeling.

What Your Dog May Be Trying to Tell You

Many resource guarding dogs are struggling with feelings such as:

• insecurity

• fear

• uncertainty

• stress

• overwhelm

• feeling unsafe

They are not trying to make your life difficult.

They are not trying to embarrass you.

They are not trying to control everything around them.

They are trying to cope the best way they know how.

That simple shift in perspective changes everything.

Why Common Solutions Often Fall Short

Many owners believe correcting the behavior will solve the problem.

I've worked with many dogs whose owners kept adding:

• more corrections

• more pressure

• more confrontation

• more control

Yet the guarding remained.

And many times it got worse.

Because pressure often creates more insecurity.

More insecurity creates more guarding.

A dog can stop growling and still feel exactly the same underneath.

You're Not Alone

My name is Jodi, and I train humans to speak dog.

I specialize in helping owners struggling with:

• Resource Guarding

• Rescue & Puppy Mill Dogs

• Out of Control Behaviors

• Separation Anxiety

• Leash Pulling

• Excessive Barking

• Reactivity & Aggression

• Destructive Behaviors

• Potty Training

• Jumping, Biting & Nipping

• Ignoring Commands

• Fearful or Timid

Over the years, I've worked with thousands of dogs and owners and have personally rehabilitated hundreds of rescue dogs in my own home.

I've met owners who:

• feel nervous around food bowls

• worry when guests come over

• avoid taking things away from their dog

• feel stressed when children are nearby

• wonder if the behavior will keep getting worse

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

I've helped many dogs and owners just like you.

The Behavior Is Not the Real Problem

When most people search for help with resource guarding, they're focused on what they can see.

• growling

• freezing

• staring

• snapping

• hovering

• guarding objects

But these behaviors are only the symptoms.

Not the root of the problem.

All behaviors are a form of your dog's communication.

When a dog guards resources, they are trying to tell us something.

Fear.

Stress.

Insecurity.

Uncertainty.

Overwhelm.

Feeling unsafe.

Most owners spend months trying to stop the guarding itself.

Yet the behavior keeps returning.

That's because lasting change happens when we understand what is driving the behavior, not just the behavior we can see.

Need Help Getting to the Root of the Behavior?

Understanding and dealing with the root cause is the first step toward meaningful change that lasts.

Looking Beneath the Behavior

Resource guarding doesn't only happen in rescue dogs.

I see it in:

• puppy mill survivors

• breeder dogs

• inherited dogs

• puppies

• senior dogs

• all dogs from all backgrounds

Some dogs have experienced scarcity.

Some have experienced instability.

Some have learned they need to protect valuable things.

Some simply do not feel secure losing something important.

Different histories.

Similar struggles.

And that's important because many owners assume their dog is being aggressive.

Many resource guarding dogs are actually struggling with insecurity.

Starting Right or Starting Over

Whether your dog is brand new or you've been struggling with this behavior for months or even years, I encourage everyone to start in the exact same place.

If The CALM DOG Connection principles can successfully rehabilitate severely traumatized rescue dogs, imagine what they can do for your dog.

Whether you're trying to prevent unwanted behaviors or help your dog overcome behaviors you're already struggling with, we start by teaching your dog how to be calm.

Not with more commands.

Not with more correction.

We start by helping your dog feel safe and learn how to relax.

One of the biggest things I've learned after working with thousands of dogs and their owners is that many loving owners accidentally create more stress without realizing it.

Most of us are simply doing what feels natural.

We talk to our dogs, many times in full sentences or baby talk.

We pet and cuddle our dogs constantly.

We let them follow us everywhere.

We try to keep them entertained.

It comes from a place of love.

But many of our dogs never learn how to feel calm without depending on us. We are their primary source of overstimulation without realizing it.

They become dependent on constant interaction, constant reassurance, or constant activity around them.

At the same time, many dogs are not getting enough of what truly fulfills their instincts as dogs.

This is what I mean when I talk about dogs becoming overstimulated and under fulfilled.

And when that imbalance continues long enough, it shows up as behavior.

Inside The CALM DOG Connection, we'll get to the root of your dog's behavior and I'll show you how to create:

• calm

• consistency

• structure

• fulfillment

• emotional safety

Before behavior can change, most dogs need to learn how to rest, decompress, and feel safe enough to finally relax.

Whether your dog is overexcited, nervous, fearful, shy, or anxious, we have to help them calm down first.

When dogs begin to feel calm and safe, behavior starts changing naturally.

💛 Your dog has been trying to communicate with you all along.

Now that you understand more about what's happening beneath the behavior, the next step is learning how to help them.

Inside The CALM DOG Connection, I'll guide you step by step so you can begin creating more calm, confidence, emotional safety, and a stronger connection with your dog.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

Choose the option that feels right for you.

Connection Instead of Correction

Inside The CALM DOG Connection online course, one of my core philosophies is:

Connection NOT Correction.

Instead of focusing on obedience, we focus on understanding.

Instead of forcing behavior change, we focus on creating calm.

You'll learn how to build trust through:

• eye contact

• calm energy

• body language

• subtle words

• positive rewards

• confidence building

• structure

• leadership

• connection

Because when dogs feel safe, understood, and connected, meaningful change becomes possible.

There Is Hope

If you're struggling with resource guarding, I want you to leave here knowing this:

You are not alone.

Your dog is not broken.

And it is not too late.

I've helped many dogs and owners struggling with:

• food guarding

• toy guarding

• owner guarding

• kennel guarding

• insecurity

Change is possible.

Because we help dogs feel safer, calmer, and more understood.
